1.2 - The Path Finder Update

March 8, 2017

The Path Finder Update is the second free content update for No Man's Sky.

The Path Finder update introduces planetary vehicles, base sharing, PS4 Pro support, ship/weapon specialisation, permadeath mode, and much more. It shows the path for the future.

VISUAL UPDATES

We’ve introduced a host of visual improvements, allowing you to explore the universe in even greater detail.

  • High and ultra resolution textures
  • More accurate Ambient Lighting
  • Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion
  • High contrast lighting effects
  • Crepuscular Rays from the Sun
  • Improved post-processing with several filter options
  • HDR mode for compatible monitors and televisions

ONLINE BASE SHARING

Bases can now be shared online, allowing other players to discover and explore your outpost.

Steam Workshop integration allows players to upload their bases to the Workshop, making it easy for other players to discover, visit, rate and subscribe to your creations.

OWN MULTIPLE SHIPS

Use the enormous hanger in your Freighter to purchase and store your own collection of starships.

This is even more meaningful with the introduction of ship specialisation, classes and the ability to trade in previous ships against new purchases

STARSHIP SPECIALISATIONS

Find and collect the perfect starship with new specialisations and classes.

  • Each starship has a specialisation (Shuttle, Fighter, Hauler or Explorer) that improves performance in specific areas.
  • Shuttles are all-rounders, Fighters specialise in combat, Haulers have expanded cargo holds and Explorer vessels feature increased warp capabilities
  • In addition to new ship types, all ships will now be class-rated: A, B, C or the ultra rare S class.
  • When purchasing a new ship, you’ll now be given the option to trade in your current ship for a discount.

PLAYSTATION 4 PRO

PS4 Pro support has been enabled allowing 4K resolution gameplay. 4K rendering on PC has also been optimised. Together with visual improvements for all versions, No Man’s Sky has never looked better.

NEW VEHICLES – EXOCRAFT

Master the surface of your home planet using new Exocraft. These land-based vehicles give new meaning to planetary navigation, combat and mining – and can be summoned from anywhere on the planet they were constructed upon.

The smallest Exocraft is the Nomad. What it may lack in cargo space, this hovercraft makes up for in speed, agility and its ability to glide over water
The mid-range Exocraft is the Roamer, a great all-rounder capable of quickly crossing rugged terrain and adapting to most situations
Finally, the Colossus is the largest of the Exocraft. This lumbering behemoth offers an enormous cargo hold perfect for those looking to harvest resources
Acquire Exocraft by hiring a Vy’keen Technician for your planetary base and completing a new series of missions
Mount powerful mining lasers and harvest resources with far greater efficiency
High-intensity long-range scanners aid the discovery of distant buildings, objects and resources
Equip weapons and eliminate threats with increased firepower
Boost your vehicle’s speed with the acceleration module

EXOCRAFT RACES

Hone your driving skills by building your own race circuit on your home planet. Find the most interesting planet, create a time trial and challenge others to beat it.

  • Obtain the Race Initiator and place it inside your Base Building zone
  • Hop into your vehicle and drive the route you’d like to map out, dropping checkpoint markers anywhere on the planet
  • Once a circuit is complete, race the track over and over to set an unbeatable lap time
  • Players visiting your base via Base Sharing will be able to race using the circuit you created, challenging themselves against your split times.

NEW SHOPS AND TRADERS

New traders have been added to space stations and bases, as well as a new currency

A valuable new currency called Nanite Clusters can be found in various locations including abandoned bases and cargo crates

Blueprint stock will refresh periodically, so check back from time to time to see if any new or rare blueprints have become available.

  • Traders aboard space stations will exchange Nanite Clusters for your choice of blueprints
  • Your standing with the three NPC factions is now more important, as traders will only sell the best technology to their closest allies
  • Your standing with a faction can be improved by offering relics and curiosities to their representatives, or through conversation choices
  • Seek out Vy’keen traders for Multi-tool technology, Gek for ship upgrades and the Korvax for Exosuit improvement blueprints
  • A new building trader will now visit your home base, and will sell new base constructs in exchange for credits

BASE BUILDING VARIETY

Customisation options for your base have more than doubled.

  • More than 40 new base-building parts have been added, including coloured lights, stairs, observation domes and more
  • Personalise your base further with new material aesthetics including Wood, Stone, Metal as well as several new colours
  • Put the finishing touches to your home, choosing from an array of new furniture finishes
  • Decorate your walls with dozens of new decals. Earn extra decals by visiting the bases of other players

MULTI-TOOL SPECIALIZATION AND CLASSES

Multi-tool specialisations and classes have been introduced. Choose between pistol, rifle, experimental and alien specialisations

  • Pistols offer increased mining capabilities, Rifles provide combat advantages and Experimental weapons are attuned to scanning. The rarest and most powerful are Alien Multi-tools
  • Similar to starships, weapons are also S, A, B or C class-rated
  • When purchasing a new Multi-tool, you can now trade in your current model for a discount

NEW WEAPON MODES

Both Multi-tool and ship weaponry can be upgraded for improved combat effectiveness

Three new weapons can be installed into Multi-tools alongside the existing Boltcaster weapon. Each weapon provides a unique combat style:

  • The Scatter Blaster is most effective in close range encounters, able to damage multiple foes at once
  • The Pulse Spitter is ideal for mid-range skirmishes, particularly against fast moving opponents
  • The Blaze Javelin is a long range weapon, capable of eliminating enemies from afar

New ship weaponry offers advanced tactical opportunities:

  • The Cyclotron Ballista fires a concentrated ball of charged particles at forward targets, causing heavy damage
  • The Positron Ejector shoots in a wide cone of destruction
  • The Infra-Knife Accelerator releases a sustained burst of rapid fire

PERMADEATH MODE

A new Permadeath mode has been added, offering the greatest challenge yet. The consequences of death will be absolute.

The difficulty level of Permadeath mode mirrors Survival mode
Survival mode difficulty has been further increased. Dying in space will now restart you on the nearest planet’s surface, away from your crashed ship
Prove your mettle by unlocking new survival and permadeath Trophies

PHOTO MODE

Document your journey with a dedicated photo mode

  • Find the perfect angle for your shot in free camera mode, revealing your Starship in third person
  • Pause and change the time of day for the perfect lighting conditions
  • Change cloud layers and fog density to take the most atmospheric shots possible
  • New photo filters can be used to add ta finishing touch
  • Share your favourite screenshots with the community using PS4 or Steam sharing functionality

We worked with well-known game photographer DeadEndThrills to implement and improve Photo Mode.

DISCOVERY MENU

Improvements to the discovery menu allow travellers to journey with a better sense of purpose

  • Your home planet is marked on the Galaxy Map, giving you a clearer feeling of your place in the universe
  • Use the discovery page to easily browse planetary information, including resource and biome data.
  • Previously visited planets can be marked with Waypoints, simplifying return navigation

PS4/PC Patch 1.12

December 7, 2016

Following are the notes for our latest patch: 1.12, which addresses some of the main issues we’ve seen reported following the launch of 1.1 (Foundation).

  • [PC] Following reports of some people experiencing issues with the game while unsupported mods are installed, we’ve added mod detection which will show a warning screen on loading when mods are detected. A mouse click or button press will dismiss this screen. We have also introduced a new method for mod installation which should prevent player’s games from breaking when a new update is released.
For details please see the ‘DISABLEMODS.TXT’ file in the \GAMEDATA\PCBANKS folder.
  • [PC] Allowed remapping of the build menu and quick menu commands to support Azerty keyboards.
  • [PC] We’ve enabled a temporary workaround for the SLI issues people are experiencing. If you are running in SLI, please disable TAA and the game should run. We are looking into a more permanent solution to this issue.
  • Fixed an issue which, in some rare cases, prevented NPCs from giving you mission critical dialogue.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause core items to be transferred from exosuit inventory to starship inventory.
  • Fixed a number of rare crashes (if you continue to experience crashes, please send a crash report and include your crash dumps).
  • [PC] Fix for monitor detection on PCs with 3rd party remote desktop or screen sharing applications.
  • [PC] Running the game via the .exe file should no longer give Steam Init errors.
  • Fixed an issue where underwater buildings could spawn without doors which in rare cases would mean the NPC missions could not be completed. (Note: If you are still being pointed to missing facilities during the NPC questlines, you can either claim a new base and re-build the NPC terminal, or if you have a Freighter, remove the NPC terminal from your base and rebuild it in the Freighter. The NPC should then give you new coordinates. We are still working on a more permanent fix for this issue).

PC Patch 1.07

SEPTEMBER 2, 2016

Objectives and stuck without Hyper-drive Issues

  • Player no longer able to redeem your pre-order ship at a point which would then prevent you learning the hyper-drive blueprint (and if you have done this, we save you).
  • Player no longer able to bypass being sent to find hyper-drive tech by reloading a save in game at a very specific point.

Getting Stuck in the world

  • Fixed a couple of low repro bugs that could result in you falling through the world and getting stuck underground.
  • A raycast in some space stations could hit a very specific point that would put the player inside the floor.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause your ship to be thrown in the sky at high speed when taking off (in rare cases could in turn lead to getting stuck).
  • Fixed an issue that would cause your ship to get stuck in terrain and prevent you from taking off, if the player managed to out run generation of terrain LOD 1, and land inside an overhang.

Gameplay

  • Some players were unable to achieve the extreme survival journey milestone, this has been resolved.
  • Fixed an issue where some players had some technology types being reported as “already known” when they weren’t actually known.
  • Under some circumstances a message was sometimes misinforming you that you learnt a blueprint when you hadn’t, this has been fixed now.
  • It was possible you could use up all available slots for waypoints on the galaxy map and be unable to set new waypoints. This is much better now.
  • There was a bug that could cause objective markers to disappear when you loaded a previous save. This is fixed now.
  • Fixed a rare issue when scanning creatures that would cause all planets to show as 100% complete even if you had only completed one.

Save / Load

  • Fixed a bug what could cause some corrupt save games to not be loaded, this is now fixed.
  • Fixed an issue where saves made with the system clock set in the future could cause problems.

Crash Fixes

  • Fixed a crash that would sometimes happen when warping into a system with a space battle in progress.
  • Fixed a crash that could happen when interacting with an NPC.

Tweaks and Improvements

  • It is now easier to scan flying creatures.
  • Fixed height and weight stats being the wrong way around for creatures.
  • Gek towers can no longer be interacted with repeatedly.
  • The ‘You have unredeemed items’ message will now only show for the first 5 minutes.
  • Fixed getting 0% charge on Photon Cannon when buying a new ship and constantly being prompted to charge it.
  • Reduce Suit VO for life support warnings and only do life support VO on 25% and 50%.
  • Fixed grave being transferred to the new star system after you warp.
  • Fixed toxic protection 3 (theta) from having the wrong name.
  • Fixed incorrect marking of sea caves under floating islands.
  • Turning down music and SFX volume in the options will now work correctly (mutes the VO also).
  • If you change ship or multi-tool and then revert to previous save the ship should now be the one you had at the time.
  • Atlas station collision improvements to prevent you from bumping into them too much.
  • Fix for the stars not being discarded during load/warp (causing duplicate stars).

PC Only Issues

  • Editing the settings file and corrupting it could cause the game to crash. Instead of crashing it will now revert back to the default settings.
  • The inventory screen now works correctly regardless of resolution.
  • Added error message for older CPUs without SSE3 support.
  • Synchronise frame capping with the first vsync (removes some framerate issues).
  • Added steam id to login call to help track down some login issues.
  • Fixed the X key size on the galaxy map.
  • If you press Tab+P in quick succession, the game paused and didn't let you out of it.
  • Fixed a performance issue by defaulting your texture resolution to a sensible value based on available GPU memory.

PC Patch 1.06

AUGUST 20, 2016

Patch 3 is targeted at our next most common support requests, fixing the next most common crashes, as well as trying to help players who have become stranded or have corrupted their save files.

Stranded in Space Station

  • If you died in your ship while in atmosphere of a planet with a damaged ship, you could respawn in a space station with your launch thrusters and pulse engine damaged. If you did not have the resources to fix them then you could no longer take off and be stuck there. This will no longer happen.

Loading Corrupted Save Files

  • Some players have corrupted save files, we’ve been working with them to still load saves even if they are corrupted (this can happen for many reasons outside of the games control). This fix has allowed many players to still load their save even if they have become corrupt on PC.

Crash fixes for next three most commonly reported issues:

  • As the player gathers a huge amount of discoveries, there was a threading issue that becomes more prevalent the more discoveries you have, and could cause the game to crash.
  • If you had collected a large number of blueprints, in a specific order it was possible to crash the game when you received a new blueprint. This has been fixed.
  • Players who set a large number of waypoints could find themselves in a situation where they could crash the game in the Galactic Map, this is remedied now (PS. A better waypoint system is coming).

PC Patch 1.05

AUGUST 20, 2016

For patch 2 our focus was on the most reported bugs or crashes. Our aim was to improve stability, and make sure player’s saves are safe in future.

Stuck under the world

  • It was possible for players to save their game stuck under the terrain, leaving them stuck. This was caused by getting shot down in atmosphere, and their ship reaching ridiculous speeds as it crashed to the planet. This has been resolved.
  • Whilst it won’t happen anymore, if you are currently already stuck under the world, we detect this and do our best to rescue you.

Crash after warping

  • Occasionally at random the game would lock up after a warp, or return to desktop. This was due to very specific timing in hardware (a threading specific bug) – meaning that unfortunately for some people it was regular, and for others they would never be able to recreate it. This was our most reported crash during gameplay, and has now been resolved.

Game failing to save until you died

  • If the player died, and then loaded the game ten times without saving, and then died, player progress wouldn’t be saved from then on until you died again. This is fixed now! This was also causing player’s saves to grow in size.

Crash fixes in scanning

  • Quite a rare crash, but in certain scenarios it was possible to scan from space or on planet and crash the game.

Crash warping inside a freighter

  • When warping into a battle sometimes the player warped into the inside of a freighter and everything went crazy – This is fixed now.

Patch 1.04-1.07 (PS4)

PC Patch 1.04

AUGUST 20, 2016

The focus of this patch was to add greater support for more hardware. Either specific hardware configs, or hardware outside our min spec. We want as many people to be able to play as possible, and these were our most reported issues.

AMD Phenom Support

  • Game is now confirmed working on Phenom CPUs.
  • Thousands of lines of assembly have been rewritten to support AMD CPUs. The game code no longer relies on anything above SSE 2,
  • Havok Physics has also now created new libs for us to add Phenom support.

Alt-Tab has improved

  • Some systems/configs were crashing or not pausing correctly on Alt Tab. This should now be resolved.

Improved Performance

  • On CPUs with 4 threads or fewer, performance has been improved.
  • On CPUs with exactly 8 threads, performance has also been significantly improved.

Framerate Stuttering due to Shader Caching

  • Framerate was initially stuttering due to shaders not being correctly cached by the GPU on some systems. We have replaced the GPU caching system. You may notice some stutter during the Galactic Map intro to the game (the very first time you run), but it should be smoother from then on. This is particularly true on ATI cards.

Max FPS Cap

  • On some CPU/GPU configurations, setting Max FPS to 60 or 30 was not giving 60 or 30 FPS (causing stuttering). This has been fixed.

Radeon 6xxx

  • Added support for this GPU, which doesn’t support OpenGL 4.5 fully.

Save Corruption

  • Solution to try to prevent saves getting corrupted no matter what’s going on in background processes (see Patch 3 below, where we also are attempting to recover corrupted saves).

Intel GPU Detection

  • We do not currently support Intel GPUS. We are working on this for a future patch, to expand our min spec.
  • In the meantime, the game will now let you know if you are trying to run with an unsupported GPU. This will hopefully flag for some users that their high end GPU has not been selected.

Gsync

  • Gsync has been disabled by default, which was causing an issue for some users

Mouse Smoothing

  • Generally this is most helpful for players with sub-30 FPS.
  • Smoothing on mouse movement has been improved to prevent hitching or stuttering, and is now adjustable through the Options menu in “Mouse Smoothing”.
  • It defaults to off. If you feel micro stutters in framerate affecting controls, feel free to turn this up. If you feel the framerate is “slow” or “lumpy”, please make sure that this is turned off

Update 1.03 (PS4)

Source: www.nomanssky.com

August 7, 2016

If you had an early copy somehow, your save game will technically work post update, but you will miss out on new content and experiences if you don’t delete your save before updating (should be obvious why from notes below). We highly recommend deleting your save if you have played before updating your game (we won’t do this in future, but it’s a day zero update).

  • The Three Paths – there are now new, unique “paths” you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience.
  • The Universe – we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.
  • Diversity – Creatures are now more diverse in terms of ecology and densities on planets.
  • Planets – we’ve added dead moons, low atmosphere and extreme hazardous planets. Extreme hazards include blizzards and dust storms.
  • Atmosphere – space, night time and day skies are now 4x more varied due to new atmospheric system, which refracts light more accurately to allow for more intense sunsets.
  • Planet rotation – play testing has made it obvious people are struggling to adjust to this during play so it’s effects have been reduced further…
  • Terrain generation – caves up to 128m tall are now possible. Geometric anomalies have been added. Underwater erosion now leads to more interesting sea beds.
  • Ship diversity – a wider variety of ships appear per star system, and are available to purchase. Cargo and installed technology now vary more, and ships have more unique attributes.
  • Inventory – ship inventories now store 5 times more resources per slot. Suit inventories now store 2.5 times more per slot. This encourages exploration and gives freedom from the beginning. We’re probably going to increase this even further in the next update, for people in the latter game phases, and will allow greater trading potential.
  • Trading – trading is deeper. Star systems and planets each have their own wants and needs, based off a galactic economy. Observing these is the key to successful trading. We still working on adjusting this based on how everyone plays, but all trading values have been rebalanced across the galaxy, giving a greater depth. A bunch of trade exploits were uncovered and have been removed
  • Feeding – creatures now have their own diet, based on planet and climate. Feeding them correctly will yield different results per species, such as mining for you, protecting the player, becoming pets, alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources.
  • Survival – recharging hazard protection requires rare resources, making shielding shards useful again. Storms can be deadly. Hazard protection and suit upgrades have been added. Liquids are often more dangerous
  • Graphical effects – Lighting and texture resolution have been improved. Shadow quality has doubled. Temporal AA didn’t make it in time, but it’s so close
  • Balancing – several hundred upgrades have had stat changes (mainly exo-suit and ship, but also weapon), new upgrades have been added.
  • Combat – Auto Aim and weapon aim has been completely rewritten to feel more gentle in general, but stickier when you need it. Sentinels now alert each other, if they haven’t been dealt with quickly. Quad and Walker AI is now much more challenging, even I struggle with them without a powered up weapon.
  • Space Combat – advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.
  • Exploits – infinite warp cell exploit and rare goods trading exploit among other removed. People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can’t stop themselves ¯\_(シ)_/¯
  • Stability – foundations for buildings on super large planets. Resolved several low repro crashes, in particular when player warped further than 256 light years in one session (was only possible due to warp cell exploit above).
  • Space Stations – interiors are now more varied, bars, trade rooms and hydroponic labs have been added
  • Networking – Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision. Star systems discovered by other players appear during Galactic Map flight
  • Ship scanning – scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans
  • Flying over terrain – pop-in and shadow artefacts have been reduced. Generation speed has been increased two fold (planets with large bodies of water will be targeted in next update)
  • Writing – The Atlas path has been rewritten by James Swallow (writer on Deus Ex) and me. I think it speaks to the over-arching theme of player freedom more clearly now. Early mission text has been rewritten to allow for multiple endings.

Next up we’re adding the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters. Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually.
